Manfred Honeck


The Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck had his musical training at the Vienna Musikhochschule and served as a viola player in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera from 1983, as well as leading the Vienna Jeunesses Musicales. In the years 1987–88 he was assistant to Claudio Abbado with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in Vienna. From 1991 to 1996 he was first Kapellmeister at the Zurich Opera and in 1997 undertook a one-year engagement as musical director of the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo. In 1993 he was awarded the European Conductor’s Prize in Zurich. From 1996 to 1999 he served as one of the three principal conductors of the MDR Symphony Orchestra in Leipzig and in 1998 was appointed principal guest conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Since the start of the 2000–2001 season he has been principal conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Stockholm. In the course of his career he has conducted leading orchestras throughout Europe, in America, Australia and Japan.
